Tagore’s 150th Anniversary
Biswa Kabi Rabindranath Tagore’s 150th Birth Anniversary and 100 Years of Tagore’s ‘Gitanjali’ was celebrated world wide since 8th May 2011. The celebrations continued for one year through rendering of his songs and poetry, presentation of his plays, publishing his paintings and holding conferences and seminars celebrating his life and vast body of work in different fields of art, culture and education.
The Governments of Bangladesh and India in an unprecedented decision, decided to jointly commemorate the occasion. The Inaugural Celebration in Bangladesh was held on 7th May 2011, inaugurated by H. E. Sheikh Hassina, Hon. Prime Minister of Bangladesh in the presence of the Hon. Vice President of India, H. E. Sri Hamid Ansari representing the Government and people of India. The Inaugural Ceremony in India, held in New Delhi was on 8th May 2011, was inaugurated by H. E. Dr. Manmohan Singh, Hon. Prime Minister of India. Ms. Shama Rahman performed at the inaugural ceremonies in New Delhi on 8th May 2011. Since then she has performed at different functions Celebrating Tagore’s 150th Anniversary, both in India and Bangladesh, including ones in Paris, New Delhi and Dhaka. Nine Albums of Tagore Songs from ‘Geetabitan’ and ‘Gitanjali’, sung by Ms. Rahman have been produced under the United Nations System (UNESCO, Paris) which were released in UNESCO Head Quarters, Paris and in New Delhi, India.
